Dior’s cruise 2022 collection featured clean, modern designs along with funky and colorful sportswear. Maria Grazia Chiuri came up with her own idea of freedom after the pandemic lockdowns.
“Sport is movement, sport is freedom. During lockdown, you would walk around your building just to get a sense of moving your body. That became our idea of freedom,” she stated was her main objective.
This idea that Sport is freedom inspired the whole collection showed in Athens’ main historic places the Panathenaic Stadium. This collection was unique as it featured many Ancient Greek inspired looks such as the beautifully draped togas and tunics that paired with lace up sneakers and athletic boots. Not only did Chiuri reconstruct and sportified the famous Greek clothing; she took her most famous articles and simplified them to fit her “Sport is movement, sport is freedom” vision.

Chiuri took all kinds of materials from fine silk and lace to sporty nylon to create a beautiful collection featuring a parachute dress with drawstrings and zippers. Mixed in with the classic Greek clothing she added some funk with colorful modern looks. Chiuri took the famous Bar Jacket and removed the lining and simplified it making it sportier. The show was closed and opened with modernized Greek peplos, known as the mother of all dresses – it can’t get any better than that. Keeping the amazing contrast between ancient and modern garments the collection included robes, vests, and pants.
Chiuri took us all on an adventure to a beautiful place where the modern age mixed with history. She chose to showcase her collection in Athens, Greece because of its beauty, and history. With this collection Chiuri brought her childhood along for inspiration. She stated, “I come from Roma, don’t forget. Around me, the reference of Greece is everywhere, on every statue. It’s my background,” and this had not been clearer than in the Cruise 2022 collection. All her inspiration was showcased throughout the collection pieces, from the sporty and movement to the beautiful, romanticized Greece.
The beautiful venue that Chiuri chose has an amazing history. The Panathenaic Stadium is the only stadium in the world made entirely of marble. Here is where sports began, it was first made for the Panathenaic Games in 330 B.C and later hosted the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875. Then in the 20th century after being refurbished it became a famous multi-purpose venue. The Panathenaic Stadium was abandoned for a time period when the Roman Emperor in the 4th century banned festivals and spectacles Chiuri chose this venue because she wanted to show her interest in clothes that gives the freedom to move, as well as the deep personal connection that she has to Greece and Rome. Chiuri managed to create a modern line that successfully portrayed Greece’s culture and beauty in a unique way.

Dior’s 2022 collection is my favorite one, I love the historical references that include a subtle modern twist. The historical reference to ancient Greece is evident throughout the collection, with the peplos and the venue choice. From this collection I believe that it would not be popular where I live, as the culture and fashion is more centralized around a country/western style rather than the modern style Dior’s collection follows.
